Have you ever visited a chemist to buy a pad and wrap it in a newspaper? Recently, I visited a medical shop and insisted the chemist give it to me without any packing. The number of judgmental eyes I came across that day made way to this thought that experiencing menstruation is abnormal, shameful and woeful. For generations we've been ignoring, silencing the voices in the street related to periods and the quite popular filthy period blood. The society today has progressed into a space where women don't use a cloth but a pad now to avoid blood leakage while menstruating. It's absurd and odd how internal misogyny forget patriarchy shuns from normally conversing on periods. If you experience a stomach ache while you're on your periods we often deter from telling people the truth about it. We've seen women themselves restricting other girls with regards to being open minded on a topic that touches the core of women's health in the society. The pain that one experiences during it can be varying according to an individual's hormonal fluctuations, genetic factors. Pain could include mild pelvic cramps, heavy flow, passing blood clots to extreme back and leg pain. Why do we not talk about experiencing such high levels of pain which could in turn be dangerous? Just because of SOCIETY? Honestly, periods are a natural mechanism like any other physical, mental disease. Let's take one step today, talk about it with your mom, daughter, friend, sister, wife and girlfriend. I'm sure they'll be pleased to solve your queries regarding it and lessen the noise, dirt and shame around a very normal phenomenon PERIODS. If you're a woman boast about having bought a pad without any extra packaging share your insecurities and be there for other women around you. Embracing what we commonly experience into a bonding factor is the first step towards understanding the pain and trauma of suffering from dysmenorrhoea. Moreover if you have severe symptoms kindly visit a gynaecologist and ignore the voices that surround you. Heaving clots, unbearable cramps, extreme breast pain, pain during sex is not normal. You matter, your pain should be acknowledged and treated. If your symptoms are severe , you could be diagnosed with cysts, fibroids, endometriosis, PID etc so please don't listen to anyone diminishing and generalising the pain. Let's accept what is natural and share your pain to lessen the suffering. If your beloved one, a friend, relative, family member is going through this encourage them to share and open up about their feelings. For once face the reality that it's 2021 and women's trauma matters.
